REVIEW | Essie Gel Polish

Good evening. I have returned to write a little review & share my thoughts on this nail polish. I have never had much luck with nail polish in the past, I don’t know what is wrong with my nails but nail polish always seems to chip after 1 day. However, was it the case with this one?

I purchased this polish from Superdrug for £9.99. This is what they had to say about it:

“essie’s Last Nightie is stunning shimmery lilac nude shade with a sheer iridescent finish. This fantasy shade will make sure your mani sparkles in any light.

Key features:
Long-lasting, gel-like shine and wear in an easy 2-step system
Top coat with professional platinum technology protects against chipping and delivers a luxury platinum-grade shine
No UV or LED lamp needed, easy removal
Revolutionary, patent-pending swirl stem wide brush for perfectly smooth colour application
Available in 31 rich, elegant and sophisticated colours
Seasonal on-trend limited edition collections available”

I would definitely agree with the shade description. When on the nails it does appear more pink than lilac, however it does have a lovely shimmer to it without it being full-on sparkle (I can’t say I’m much of a fan of that). It does also look absolutely beautiful when the light hits it as well.

However, there is one thing I would like to say. As you can see above, it does mention about having professional platinum technology to protect against chipping. Well… this is where I feel I must have a problem with my nails. The very next day my nails chipped. The above photo was taken on the 9th of May.

This was then taken on the 10th. Now, I know, you can hardly see the chip. It chipped on my middle finger. However, I would like to point out, my nails are very weak, and bend/break very very easily. The middle finger is also the nail which I bite when anxious (which much to nobody’s surprise has been a common occurrence in these last couple of months) so that probably didn’t help the situation.

I then decided to ignore my middle fingers & see how it goes for the rest of the nails.

This was then the next day (11th). At this point, I had decided that was enough. Not of the polish, but of my stupidly weak nails.

I cut them all back to a shorter length where they couldn’t bend and break and what-not. I then continued to repaint them again, giving the nail polish one more chance. I can’t actually remember the exact date I did it, but I want to say it was still a couple of days after that due to that being my biting nail.

Now, I again was ignoring my biting nails, because it really isn’t fair to judge a nail polish on my own terrible habits.

It was beginning to look up, the polish was staying on my nails a lot better. It was lasting through washing up, cleaning, everything! I was getting so impressed. Then, the other day, I decided to use up some fabric & make a top. I have no clue what happened but the polish started to chip. It was very weird. I was then (the day after) doing my morning workouts, and the nail polish started peeling on my index fingers.

I have no idea what happened, but all of a sudden both my index finger nails were bare, and half the polish on both my thumbs were gone. I also seem to have lost half the polish on my middle finger (right hand) somehow.

I find it strange, maybe I’m doing something wrong, but every single nail polish just peels off my nails.

I was so convinced this wouldn’t because all the reviews were great, maybe it is actually my nails?!

All in all, I can’t say I was too happy with paying a tenner for some nail polish that peels so easily. Maybe a top coat would be the answer?

Either way, I think this colour is absolutely gorgeous, and I will be repainting my nails with it as I am enjoying actually having painted nails during lockdown (yay for not being allowed when at work). I am also like a magpie and get attracted to anything shiny so…

I feel like this was more of a story than a review, but I’m no good at sticking to a particular way of doing things because I ramble too much.

I would definitely recommend giving these polishes a go, as they are absolutely stunning, but maybe try a top coat? I won’t be repurchasing myself because 1. if I get to the end of this and still not back at work I would be shocked and 2. if I’m back at work nail polish is honestly useless to me because I can’t wear it.

Thank you for reading, if you made it all the way through then congratulations! I hope you all stay safe, if you have any thoughts yourself do share them in the comments.

  1. Nooo! So sad to hear this. I’ve never tried the gel formulas but the regular ones are my go to which (as you know…) I adore!
I used to have very brittle peeling nails and did find my nail varnish came off more easily then. I actually found a strengthening base coat very helpful as it fixed the problem and then kept my nail varnish on for longer. I think I used a Sally Hansen blue bottle base coat (bought on ebay as it was far cheaper there!)

So sorry to hear this wasn’t a huge success! I am really surprised!!

    1. I seem to find it’s the same with all polishes so I think it must be my nails! Yeah I’ve been using the Essie strong start base coat, but it’s still come off half my nails!
I might try just the strengthening until they’re actually stronger & try again then!
